North to Colorado

Traffic was light on I-25 between Albuquerque, NM and the Colorado line.

April 10, Monday, we left American RV Park around 11 a.m. and stopped at the next exit for fuel at the Flying J.  Diesel was $2.579 with our Good Sams card.  We started off with a clean windshield, but didn't manage to plan for an audio book, so the drive seemed longer than it actually was.

When Valerie is not driving, she is looking for barns.

A few miles east on I-40, George drove north on I-25.  We stopped at La Bajada for a quick safety check and Valerie took over up through Santa Fe and Las Vegas.

George was rested and Valerie was ready for a break when we discovered a pull out for a quick driver change.  The weather and the scenery were great, and we encountered very little construction today.

By around 3:30 p.m. it was time for the dogs to go out, so we stopped at the Thaxton Rest Area and made plans to stop at the Walmart in Trinidad, just across the border into Colorado and less than 40 miles away.

There were miles and miles with nothing but a few cattle strewn here and there, so Valerie had the camera ready, just in case she had an opportunity to capture a barn photo or two.

Just as we drove through Raton Pass, we were thinking it had been a fairly easy drive, we looked up to see the 'Flagger' sign and another indicated we should be prepared to stop between mile markers two and five.  We sat for several minutes, but nothing like our experience on Friday.

We arrived at the Walmart Store shortly after 4 p.m. There were already several RVs in the parking lot, and we found a spot directly in front of the store at the farthest end near the outer road parallel to I-25.  We were surprised to see beautiful snow-capped mountains behind the store and some snow still piled in one corner of the lot.  The wind was howling out of the south, and we obtained permission to stay the night.  George was unfortunately unable to get a prescription filled until our next stop.

So, we are just across the Colorado/New Mexico border, and conveniently located right next door with a new hotel across the street, is a store called Cannaco, which we learned is a recreational marijuana store.  But we decided we'd just work and watch TV, and hopefully wake up rested to complete this journey.

Temps are expected to drop into the upper 30's tonight, so we'll layer blankets and turn on the heat in the morning.  We look forward to settling in somewhere near Boulder tomorrow for the next couple of weeks.

  1. I was hoping the temps would warm up by now, but I keep forgetting it's still April.
